Expanded Biographical Narrative

An aeronautical engineer for Hughes Aircraft Company and graduate of Stanford University, Tom B. Carvey, Jr., began his democratic Party political activity in 1948 as the first president of the Palos Verdes Democratic Club. His subsequent activities included serving as secretary of the Democratic State Central Committee, delegate to the 1956, 1960, 1964, and 1968 national conventions, chairman of the first California Democratic Council State Issues Program, and CDC's third president, 1961-65.

The papers contain correspondence, minutes of CDC Directors' meetings, election campaign literature, various publications of CDC or relating to issues of interest to CDC, and clippings. In addition to the files on the California Democratic Council, there is a substantial group of materials on the activities of the Democratic Party in the 46th Assembly District from 1953 to 1960.

The arrangement of the collection is basically chronological with a small group of subject files that are listed alphabetically. In most cases, headings established by Mr. Carvey or his secretary have been retained for the various folders.

The collection was a gift of Mr. Carvey in November, 1971, and forms with the previously acquired collections of Joseph Wyatt, Charles Gant, Joyce Fadem, and Knox Mellon, an important research archive documenting California grass roots politics of the 1950's and 1960's.
