Biographical History

Alva Hugh Maddox was born on 1930 April 17 in Andalusia, Ala. He received his early education in Florala, Ala., and he graduated as the salutatorian from Covington County High School in 1947. He then attended the University of Alabama, earning a Bachelor's degree in 1952.

While attending the University of Alabama, Maddox began his professional career as a journalist for the Florala News. In 1952, after completing his undergraduate study, he became a commissioned officer for the United States Air Force. He left the service in 1954 in order to pursue a graduate degree in law. In 1957, after obtaining his law degree and being admitted to the Alabama bar, Maddox worked as a law clerk for Judge Aubrey M. Cates at the Alabama Court of Appeals. As a law clerk, Maddox performed legal research and prepared legal memoranda for the judge. Shortly afterward in 1958, Maddox worked as an attorney field examiner for the Veteran's Administration in the Chief Attorney's office. In 1959, Maddox became the law clerk for Judge Frank M. Johnson, the United States District Judge for District 15.

Following his brief stint as a law clerk, Maddox practiced law in Montgomery. In 1963 Maddox became a professor at the Jones School of Law in Montgomery, where he taught while still practicing law in U.S. District Court. In 1963 he became a circuit judge for the 15th judicial circuit in Montgomery. One year later he became assistant district attorney. Maddox was named legal advisor to Governor George C. Wallace in 1965. Maddox also served as legal advisor to Governor Lurleen B. Wallace (1967-68) and Governor Albert P. Brewer (1968-69). In 1968 Hugh Maddox became an associate justice for the Alabama Supreme Court.
