Biographical History
The Indianapolis YWCA was founded in 1894. It joined the World YWCA at its formation in 1906. The organization sponsored programs to help working women in the city at first, and later expanded to more recreational and educational activities.
The Indianapolis YWCA opened in 1895 at 139 N. Meridian Street, offering classes, lunches, and lodging. It moved to 329 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and remained at this site until 1976, when it moved to Guion Road. During World Wars I and II, the YWCA did considerable war work both at home and overseas. YWCA programs were offered for girls, teens, and women and included practical as well as recreational classes. In 1922 the Phyllis Wheatley branch of the YWCA was opened for African American women and girls, and the YWCA fully integrated in 1959.
