Biographical History
Everett Day Hawkins was born in Orange, New Jersey on May 10, 1906. He entered Oberlin College in 1924 and spent the years 1927-29 in Taigu, China as a Shansi Representative of the College. He received the A.B. from Oberlin in 1928, and the A.M. and Ph. D. degrees from Princeton University in 1933 and 1934. In 1935, he joined the faculty of Mt. Holyoke College, where he taught until 1963 when he was appointed to the faculty of the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Hawkins' served the U.S. government frequently as an expert on Southeast Asian economic development. His government posts included Director of Information for the U.S. Office of War Information in Chungking (1944-46); Chief of the Indonesian branch of the Asian division of the State Department (1953); and consultant to the Ford Foundation (1963-64). Hawkins authored books and articles on international and development economics. He died at the age of 64 in 1970.
