Biographical History

Born in Kayseri, Turkey, the son of Rev. Wilson A. Farnsworth and Caroline E. Palmer Farnsworth, missionaries; educated by his parents in Turkey and began his musical training with his mother; spent a brief time in the Newtonville, Mass., high school; for eight months traveled as a ship's boy on a sailing vessel to Chile; upon his return to the U.S. studied piano with Benjamin D. Alien, whose daughter Charlotte he married in 1890; became an organist in Worcester, Mass., and continued to read widely. In 1887 traveled to Boulder, Colo., and found opportunities for music there; visited New York in 1899 and in 1900 began teaching at Columbia Teachers College and Horace Mann School; wrote extensively: books, articles, reports for conferences, essays and developed new courses at Teachers College in harmony, history, appreciation, etc. In the 1920s-1930s took an interest in radio and phonograph music. He and his wife Charlotte founded Camp Hanoum (later renamed Camp Farnsworth) in Thetford, Vt., in 1949, a summer camp for girls, and continued their involvement with this well into the 1930s. The couple retired to Thetford, Vt., and continued to travel extensively.
