Biographical History
Since 1957, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has required the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and other member institutions to conduct periodic, formal self-studies as part of the process of accreditation by the Association. In 1993, with the creation of the Self-Study Steering Committee, the University began a process that ended in 1995 with the publication of a lengthy self-study report and a visit by the Southern Association's Reaffirmation Committee. The University Reaccreditation Office was established to provide clerical and administrative support to the Steering Committee and its task forces; it was disbanded at the conclusion of the self-study.

In its 1985 self-study, the university examined its role as a research university. In 1995 it reaffirmed its commitment to teaching.
Preparation for the self-study began in the spring of 1993, when Professor of English Darryl J. Gless was appointed to chair the twenty-one-member Steering Committee. After meeting throughout the spring of 1993, the committee appointed task forces on administrative processes; undergraduate programs; graduate and professional programs; continuing education, outreach, and service programs; faculty; educational support services; student development services; and intercollegiate athletics. Each task force had two goals: first, to determine if the university had met the standards set by the Commission on Colleges' Criteria for Accreditation, and second, to suggest ways in which the university might improve teaching. The task forces submitted their reports to the Steering Committee in May 1994. After reviewing them, the Steering Committee distributed the reports to the University community for additional comment and criticism.
The University Reaccreditation Office was established to provide clerical and administrative support to the Steering Committee and its task forces. It was disbanded after the self-study was complete. The records of the office consist largely of the files of the various task forces and supporting documents used by them in the preparation of the self-study report. Also included are copies of the self-study report and the report of the Reaffirmation Committee of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
