She is best known for the book Our Village, a series of sketches of village scenes based upon Three Mile Cross, a small Hamlet in Shinfield. Her humor and quick wit was balanced with tales of harsh poverty in her work.

They had to move to a labourer's cottage when her father's extravagance ruined them, and thereafter she earned a living as a writer to support him and pay his gambling debts. Her gift was for charming sketches of country manners, scenery, and character, which after appearing in magazines.
Were collected as Our Village, 5 vols, 1824-32. She received a civil list pension in 1837, which was increased on her father's death from subscriptions raised to pay his debts. She died in 1855.
