Biographical History
Born in New York City in 1829, Wheelock earned law and divinity degrees from Harvard University prior to serving with the New Hampshire volunteers during the Civil War. While on active duty in New Orleans, he worked for the Board of Education for Freedmen, Department of the Gulf. After the war, Wheelock held several posts with the Reconstruction government in Texas including state superintendent of public instruction. In 1887, he organized a Unitarian society in Spokane, Washington Territory, and two years later moved back to Texas to lead the Unitarian movement in Austin. A prolific writer and public speaker, Wheelock ordered his papers destroyed on his death in 1901. Few manuscript materials survive.
