Biographical History

In the aftermath of the Irish Rebellion, Robert Nugent of Carlanstown, in recognition for hist service and loyalty to the English, was granted an exemption from the transplantation to Connacht and Clare, which was part of the Cromwellian Settlement of Ireland (1652). He and Edmund Nugent of Carlanstown were able to recover the land rights during the Restoration. Edmund Nugent grandson, Robert Nugent (ca. 1702-1788), 1st Earl Nugent became a prominent British politician and was known as a poet.
