Samuel Swett (1774-1853), the son of William and Mary (Torrey) Swett, was a merchant and ship-owner of Boston and Dedham, Mass., and played a prominent part in the development of the merchant marine in Boston. He also owned extensive real estate in Boston and Dedham.
Swett married four times with his first two wives being the daughters of Dr. John Sprague, Jr. (1752-1800). He married on 7 May 1797, Esther Sprague (1777-1799). They had two sons: Edward Sprague Swett (1798-1821) and Charles Harrison Sprague Swett (1799-1799). He then married, on 15 September 1800, Elizabeth Delone Sprague (1776-1813). They had six children: Charles Grandison Swett (1801-1834); Horatio Harrison Swett (1805-1830); Elizabeth Swett (1807-1901); James Lloyd Swett (1808-1840); John Sprague Swett (1811-1872); and Samuel Delone Swett (1812- ). Swett married third, on 24 November 1831, Elizabeth Thurston (1771-1840); and fourth, on 9 September 1847, Polly Wood (1778-1856).
