Biographical History
Born in Rhode Island in 1773, Frances Slocum (Ma-con-a-qua) moved as a child to Pennsylvania where she was captured by Delaware Indians and brought to Indiana. She was raised by Miami Indians and married in the tribe. She made numerous contributions to Indian/white relations and the development of the Northwest Territory, and was able to influence peaceful relations between the government and Indians. She died in 1847 and was buried in Wabash County, Indiana.
John Edward Roush was born September 12, 1920 and elected to the Indiana General Assembly in 1949, the year he received his law degree. After serving as in World War II and as the Huntington County prosecuting attorney, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Indiana's 5th district in 1958, serving 10 years before his defeat in 1968. Returning in 1971 as representative from the 4th district, he served another six years before his defeat in 1976. He served on the Space and Aeronautics and Government Operations Committees during his first tenure and on the Appropriations Committee during his second tenure. He was active in establishing of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and in the creation of the 911 emergency communication system.

J. Edward Roush was born in Barnsdall, Okla. in 1920. He received in AB from Huntington College, 1942, and his JD from Indiana University, 1949. Before serving as the Fifth District Congressman from Indiana, Roush served as a prosecuting attorney in Huntington County, Ind. Roush served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention several times and also served as a Fourth District Congressman form 1970-1976.
