Biographical History
Australian historian, economist, social scientist and influential public intellectual. Hugh Stretton was born in Melbourne on 15 July 1924, and educated at Beaumaris State School, Mentone Grammar and Scotch College. He studied law and classics at the University of Melbourne (interrupted by military service), history at Oxford University (M.A. 1948) and political science at Princeton (as a visiting fellow). Hugh Stretton was appointed a Fellow at Balliol College, Oxford, in 1948, and taught at Oxford between 1948 and 1954. Other appointments include Emeritus Professor of History, University of Adelaide; visiting research fellow in Economics, University of Adelaide; Deputy Chairman of the South Australian Housing Trust; and Fellow of the Academy of the Humanities.
