Biographical History
Mason was part of the Merril Horse unit, which formed in Battle Creek (Mich.) but was not accepted for use by the governor of Michigan. Instead, the unit later became part of Missouri 2nd Cavalry, Company H. Mason, from Calhoun County (Mich.), enlisted at the age of 18 in Aug. 1861. He was mustered in Sept. 1861. Later, he re-enlisted in Jan. 1864 and was mustered in June 1864. He was promoted to Corporal in Dec. 1864 and mustered out at Nashville (Tenn.) in 1865. After the war he lived in Cincinnati (Ohio). (For further information see the history of Merrill Horse unit, v. 45 of the Michigan Civil War regiments history series.).
