Biographical History
William Sutton (1800-1882), the son of William and Elizabeth (Treadwell) Sutton, was born in Salem, Mass., on 26 July 1800. Sutton was a successful merchant in Salem, and from 1835 to 1880, president of the Salem Commercial Bank, later called the First National Bank of Salem. He was a trustee or director for a number of institutions and corporations, a member of the Massachusetts state legislature, and an officer in the Salem Cadets. Sutton was an active Freemason, joining the Jordan Lodge in Danvers in 1823 and the Essex Lodge in Salem in 1845. In 1879, he donated his library to the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. Sutton married twice and died in Peabody, Mass., on 18 April 1882.
