Biographical History

Henry S. Burrage was born in Fitchburg, Mass., in 1837. He attended Brown University and entered the Union Army a year after his graduation in 1861, eventually obtaining the rank of major. After the war, he attended Newton Theological Seminary, from which he graduated in 1867. In 1883 he also received a Doctor of Divinity from Brown. During his life, Rev. Burrage served as a trustee of Brown and Colby College, as state historian of Maine, as well as in many other capacities. He wrote and published extensively on the history of Maine, and was respected as an expert in the field. Rev. Burrage died in Kennebunkport, Me., in 1926 after an automobile accident.

Henry S. Burrage was born 1837 Jan. 7 in Fitchburg, Mass., and died in 1926. He was the state historian of Maine, editor of the Portland-based Zion's Advocate, and a clergyman. He was also a Civil War soldier from Massachusetts.
