Biographical History

Born December 7, 1904, Escanaba, MI; died January 16, 1987, Clarkston, MI. Professor and author. Son of John Matthew Hartnett and Mary Winifred (Killian) Hartnett, Robert was baptized into the Roman Catholic Church on December 19, 1901. The Hartnetts moved to Chicago in 1906, settling in the Rogers Park area in 1909. He attended St. Ignatius Parish School and Loyola Academy before earning his B.A. in Philosoph and English from Loyola University Chicago in 1927. Upon graduation he entered the Society of Jesus at the St. Stanislaus Novitiate in Florrissant, MO. He received a M.A. in Latin, Greek, and English from St. Louis University in 1931 and Ph. L in Philosophy in 1932. Hartnett received a PH. D. in Political Science and Sociology from Fordham University in 1941. He taught at the University of Detroit, Xavier University, Fordham University and Loyola University Chicago. At Loyola, Hartnett served as the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and was a tenured member of the Political Science deparment faculty. In addition to teaching, Hartnett served as the president of America Press and the Editor in Chief of "America" and "The Catholic MInd" from 1948 to 1955, as well as a respected lecturer on political science, religion, and education. He passed away on January 16, 1987, in Clarkston, MI.
