Biographical History

Charles Henry Salter was born in London on the 21st of July, 1918. He was educated at St Paul's School, where he later became President of the Union Society. After this he began his career at the New College Oxford as a Senior Open Classics Scholar in 1937. Only two years later he won two Chancellor's prizes, a testament to his potential and an unprecedented achievement at the time. His career was then interrupted by World War II, however in 1946 he returned to Oxford to continue his studies among many notable peers including Mary Wilson (who later became Baroness Warnock), Iris Murdoch and Anthony Wedgwood Benn.

Salter first joined the University of Glasgow within the Department of Humanities in 1948. In 1950, he then transferred to the Department of English Literature at the request of the head of the Department at the time, Peter Alexander, a Shakespearean scholar. Among his works includes articles on Dryden and Addison, as well as contributions to text books on English poetry and modern theatre. Salter retired in 1983, and died in July 2008. His notes compiled within this collection demonstrate his interest and passion for both the Classics and English Literature, including notes on Ovid, the Homeric question and a review of a book on Homer. Salter was known to have a different tactic to others when constructing exam papers, as he would ask critical questions of his texts and challenge his students and colleagues alike with queries about the texts he continued to study.
