1815-1817 secretary to Henry Salt, British consul-general in Egypt; 1817 sent to supervise the excavations of Giovanni Belzoni at Thebes and to make drawings of the monuments; 1818-1819 travelled with Henry Salt and William John Bankes; 1819 returned to England; 1821-1822 participated in the survey of the coastline of north Africa; 1825 fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London; 1851 emigrated to New Zealand; 1851-1862 farmed land at Governors Bay.
