McAlpin, Ellen, 1856-1934.

Ellen McAlpin (1856-1934) was born at the Hermitage Plantation, the daughter of Angus McAlpin. She finished her education at Madame Le Fevre's School in Baltimore, Maryland, after which she returned to Savannah. As a young woman she became interested in the work of the Savannah Port Society. She organized and was the first President of the Young Women's Port Sewing Society. She was one of the organizers of the Young Women's Christian Association in Savannah and served on its board for many years. She was also active in the Women's Auxiliary of the Independent Presbyterian Church. She lived in the McAlpin home on the corner of Oglethorpe Avenue and Barnard Street. In 1909 she bought the old Mercer home at 817 Whitaker Street. In both of these homes she kept a "guest house" for visitors to Savannah in the winter season.
