Biographical History

Biographical note: John Lambert Richmond was an American clergyman and physician.

He was born near Chesterfield, Mass., April 7, 1785, the son of Nathaniel and Susannah Lambert Richmond. He was sixth in descent from John Richmond (1594-1664) of Ashton Keynes, Wiltshire who had emigrated from England in 1637 and settled in Taunton, Mass. Richmond was ordained a Baptist minister in 1816 and was awarded a medical diploma in 1822 from the Medical College of Ohio. He is known for performing the first successful Caesarean operation to be reported in the U.S., April 22, 1827 in Newton, Ohio. Richmond continued to both preach and practice medicine until his death in Covington, Indiana, October 12, 1855.
