Biographical History

Ovington, a leader in the fight for equal rights for Afro-Americans, was a co-founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. For further biographical information, see Notable American Women: The Modern Period (1980).

Ovington was one of the first white social workers in the New York African-American community around the turn of the century; she was one of the founders of the NAACP.
