Biographical History
The McLoughlin Brothers published children's books from the early 1800s through the 1970s. They were famous for their chromolithographed books, toys, games and other material designed for children.
19th century New York publishing company, founded by John McLoughlin and later run by his sons, John, Jr. and Edmund. McLoughlin often published titles previously released in England, thereby introducing American children to the works of Kate Greenaway, Randolph Caldecott. The history of 19th century American children's literature, and of colored toybooks in particular, parallels the development of McLoughlin Brothers.
McLoughlin Bros. developed out of a printing company started in New York in 1828. After an 1840 merger with John Elton, John McLoughlin, Jr. and his brother Edmund took over the business giving it the name by which it is here known. The company became known as the premier publisher of children's books in America. It was bought by Milton Bradley in 1920 and continued as a division there until 1944.
