Biographical History

Robert Neel Proctor (1954-) was born in Texas. He received his bachelor's degree in biology from Indiana University at Bloomington in 1976, and his master's and doctoral degrees in the history of science from Harvard University in 1977 and 1984 respectively. While working on his doctorate, Proctor studied abroad in France and Germany. From 1984 to 1986 Proctor was an Andrew Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the History of Science Program at Stanford University. From 1986 to 1990 he was Chair of the Program in Science, Technology and Power at the New School For Social Research. He came to Penn State in 1990 with his wife Londa Schiebinger, with whom he co-directed the Science, Medicine and Technology in Culture program for nine years. In 1999 he became the first historian to testify against the tobacco industry. In 2004 Proctor left Penn State to join the Program in History and Philosophy of Science and Technology at Stanford University.
