This professional society of teachers of physics in colleges, universities, and secondary schools, was established in 1930 to advance the teaching of physics and further the appreciation of the role of physics in society and culture. It was a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics.

It was a founding member society of the American Institute of Physics. Albert A. Bartlett, professor of Physics at University of Colorado, was president of AAPT in 1978.
