Biographical History

Samuel Bellingham was born to Elizabeth and Richard Bellingham in England around 1620; the exact date of his birth is unknown. In 1634, Samuel traveled with his family to New England, where his father would later become Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He attended Harvard College and was a member of the first graduating class in 1642. Following graduation, he moved to Europe and received a Doctor of Medicine degree at Leyden. Following that, he is believed to have moved to London. Bellingham married twice and had one child, a daughter named Elizabeth, with his first wife. He married for the second time, to the widow Elizabeth Savage, in April 1695. Following their wedding, Elizabeth traveled to New England to manage her new husband's affairs. On November 8, 1697, she left New England to return to England and was lost at sea in a shipwreck, on the coast of Ireland, in February 1698. Samuel Bellingham died in 1700.
