Uxbridge Cotton Mills.

A cotton manufacturer in Uxbridge, Mass. incorporated in 1841. First housed in buildings formerly owned by Crown and Eagle Mills, it made sheetings, shirtings, scrims and voiles. It was purchased in 1849 by Paul Whitin & Sons, a family business in Whitinsville, Mass. In 1864, this company was dissolved and divided among various family members. James F. Whitin became the owner of the Uxbridge Cotton Mills and ran them until his death in 1904. A grandson, James E. Whitin, inherited and took them over in 1907. In 1918, a new corporation, James Whitin, Inc., was formed; it included other interests of Whitin, such as his Grey Rock Farm and other properties. In 1923 the mill was closed and its machinery sold. James Whitin, Inc., dissolved in 1926 and the property was transferred to James's wife, Edgeworth Whitin. After the mill closing, James Whitin devoted himself to managing his property; he also became involved in the management of a carpet factory in Worcester, Mass., belonging to M.J. Whittall Associates, the company of his in-laws.
