Biographical History
The collection concerns four generations of the Dean family, centered first in New York State and later in Indianapolis. In 1798 John Dean, a Quaker, moved from Westchester to Brothertown, New York, to work on behalf of the Friends in New York City and Elizabeth, N.J. In 1830 Brothertown became known as Deansville and Thomas Dean was appointed postmaster. Dean's son John attended Hamilton College and became a lawyer, moving to Brooklyn, New York. In 1871 the Dean family moved to Indianapolis and established Dean Brother's Pump Works.
Calvin Dean was a rancher who raised prize bulls in Kansas and Oklahoma. He moved with his family to Boulder, Colorado in 1909-1910. The family home was at 945 University Ave., Boulder, Colorado. Calvin and his wife Elizabeth Armstrong Dean had two daughters, Marguerite and Martha (called Mattie), who never married.
Mattie Dean graduated State Preparatory School (Boulder, Colo.) in 1912 and became a pharmacist. Marguerite Dean graduated the University of Colorado with a B.A. in 1912, an M.A. in 1914, and a law degree in 1924. Between 1912 and 1924 she taught school in Nebraska and Sunshine, Colorado. Neither sister married and both lived at the family home until their deaths.
