Biographical History
Located in Charlottesville, Va. and begun as a woolen mill during the Civil War, the company occupied the site of an earlier cotton carding and spinning mill. Incorporated in 1868 by H.C. Marchant, the mill did carding and fulling for the local domestic market and produced a coarse grade of woolen cloth. Later it produced flannels, satinets, kerseys and cassimeres. It later specialized in uniform cloth, including cadet greys, venetians, and kersey overcoating. The mill operated until 1965.
