Biographical History

Lincoln County in Maine was incorporated June 19, 1760. It received its name in compliment to Thomas Pownal, who was born in Lincoln, England. Pownal served as Colonial Governor of Massachusetts from 1757 to 1769. Lincoln County parted with some of its territory to form Washington and Hancock Counties, in 1789: to form Kennebec, 1799; to form Waldo, 1827; to form Androscoggin and Sagadahoc, 1854; to form half of Knox, 1860. The county seat is Wiscasset.
