Biographical History
Controversy over the use of the English language for worship led to the formation of the English Lutheran Synod of Ohio in 1836 within the boundaries of the Joint Synod of Ohio. By 1840, some members declared their independence from the Joint Synod. Those who remained in the synod reorganized and met in 1841 as the sixth convention of the English Synod of Ohio. In 1855 the English Synod seceded from the Joint Synod which then organized another English Synod which first met in 1857 at Circleville, Ohio. In 1869 some English District members who were dedicated to the Joint Synod withdrew from the district after it joined the General Council against the wishes of the Joint Synod. The new English District of the Joint Synod remained as such until the end of the Joint Synod.
