Biographical History

Lewis H. Chamberlin, resident of Ypsilanti, Mich. enlisted as private in 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry in August, 1862. He later rose to the rank of the 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant. The 24th Michigan served in the Army of the Potomac, and was assigned to the famous Iron Brigade. It took part in Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg campaigns, played an important role in Grant's 1864 campaign, and was engaged heavily at Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Petersburg. In the spring of 1865, the Regiment was separated from the Iron Brigade, and assigned to duty at Camp Butler, Illinois. In May 1865, the regiment was part of the honor guard at Lincoln's Funeral in Springfield, Illinois. It was mustered out on June 30, 1865.
