Biographical History

Crawford Long, a Georgia native, received his education at Franklin College (University of Georgia). He completed his medical training at the University of Pennsylvania in 1839. After a short time in New York, Dr. Long returned to Georgia and spent his entire career there as a physician and surgeon. He is credited with performing the first operation with ether anesthesia on Mar. 30, 1842.

Crawford W. Long was born in 1815 in Danielsville, Ga. He attended the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. In 1841 Long returned to Georgia to practice medicine in Jefferson, Ga. In 1842 he used sulphuric ether as an anesthetic during an operation. Long used this treatment for the next four years, however, he failed to report his findings to the medical community at large.
