Charleston, South Carolina benevolent society established in 1810 for the distribution of copies of Christian literature and the Old and New Testaments.
Bible distribution society established in 1810. An 1829 convention of delegates from South Carolina Bible societies created executive committees for the Upper and Lower Divisions of the state. Each committee had the responsibility of appointing a general agent for its division. The agent's duty was to visit each district in his division and organize a plan for raising funds for Bible distribution to destitute families. The committee of the Lower Division was located in Charleston. Committee members were Thomas S. Grimke (chairman), Daniel Ravenel, Thomas Napier, Rev. Dr. W.A. McDowell, and Rev. B. Manly. William Haynsworth was the secretary of the 1829 convention.
