Soldier, rancher, merchant, and civic leader, of Refugio County, Tex.
A native of New York, John H. Wood entered the cattle business after serving in the Texas army during the Texas Revolution and during the Republic period.
He established ranches in Jackson, Victoria, and Refugio Counties, and participated in several other business ventures. A political and civic leader, he was involved in establishing the towns of St. Mary's and Rockport, served the Confederate government during the Civil War, and contributed to church and educational projects.
