Biographical History
Built by Nathaniel Shaw on Winthrop's Neck, New London, Conn., in 1778, first commanded by John Harman; in 1779 fitted for a six months' cruise under Capt. Nathaniel Saltonstall and after being out for three months and sending in six prizes, went into Boston harbor and was impressed into Continental service; with crew sent with the fleet under Commodore Dudley Saltonstall, against the British post at Penobscot; while there was driven ashore and burnt to prevent being taken by the enemy. Officers and crew escaped into the woods.
Built by Nathaniel Shaw on Winthrop's Neck, New London, Conn., 1778; in spring of 1779 fitted for 6 months cruise under Capt. Nathaniel Saltonstall; sent in 6 prizes during first three months and then went to Boston where impressed into Continental service and with the crew sent with the fleet under Commodore Dudley Saltonstall against the British post at Penobscot (Me.); was driven ashore and burnt to prevent its being burned by the enemy and crew escaped and fled into the woods; name of vessel also found as General John Putnam.
