Biographical History

George Hull Bowers (1794-1872), Rector of St Paul's, Covent Garden, 1832-1847, and Dean of Manchester, 1847-1871. Bowers promoted schemes for 'schools for the sons of clergymen and others', and was a founder of Marlborough School, Wiltshire. He suggested the foundation of Rossall School, Fleetwood, Lancashire, and promoted Haileybury College, Hertfordshire. He was an advocate of the 'free and open church movement', and was instrumental in the erection of St Alban's Church, Cheetwood, Manchester.
