Biographical History
Samuel Cooper (1609-1672) was a miniature painter, especially of royal and courtly subjects. His sitters included Oliver Cromwell, Charles II, and James, Duke of York; he was appointed the king's limner in 1663. He died at the height of his powers and popularity in his house in Covent Garden in 1672.
