Biographical History

Louis P. Aloe was a manufacturer of optical goods; president of A.S. Aloe Co., opticians; president of the National Association of Surgical and Optical Dealers. He was also a civic leader who served as president of the Board of Aldermen from 1916-1923; he was involved in many civic improvement projects and the drafting of the city charter in 1914. After his death in 1929, the Board of Aldermen designated the area bounded by Market, Twentieth, Chestnut and Eighteenth Streets to be called Aloe Plaza in tribute to him. The dedication of a fountain on this site, designed by the Swedish sculptor, Carl Milles, took place on May 11, 1940.
