Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an African American artist with Puerto Rican and Haitian American ancestry. He gained popularity as a graffiti artist in New York City and international acclaim as a neo-expressionist artist.
SAMO© Graffiti was a collaboration between Jean-Michel Basquiat, Al Diaz, and Shannon Dawson from 1977 to 1980, which consisted of short phrases of graffiti painted on the streets in downtown Manhattan, New York City. Dawson was also a trumpet player with several bands, including Gray and Konk.
