Biographical History
Novelist and journalist. During World War II he was one of Australia's leading war correspondents. In 1947 he married Charmain Clift and together they wrote many successful novels, short stories and television scripts. The couple spent 10 years on the Greek island of Hydra before returning to Australia in 1964. His best known novels are My Brother Jack (1964) and Clean straw for nothing (1969).
The author spent the period covered in this diary as war correspondent in New Guinea for the Sydney Morning Herald, Melbourne Age and Daily Telegraph (London). The New Guinea Diary published by Angus and Robertson Sydney 1943 gives only a general picture of the campaign in New Guinea due to problems of censorship during the war years. In 1984 it was published by Collins, Sydney as "War diary 1942". Some books by George Johnston are Grey Gladiator, Battle of the Seaway, Australia at War and My Brother Jack (1964).
