Biographical History
The Dean of Student Life is responsible for oversight of the social, extracurricular, and athletic activities of the undergraduate student body.
Among its responsibilities are registration of all student organizations, selection of resident advisors and masters of dorms and colleges, the foreign student advisory program, the Women's center, the International Center, the Third World Center, and student discipline. Prior to 1954 much of the work of the office was handled by the Dean of the College. From 1954 until 1972 the office was known as the Dean of Students, then from 1972 to 1993 it was known as the Dean of Student Affairs. In 1999 the responsibilities of the Dean of Student Life were split between two newly created positions, the Dean of Undergraduate Students, and the Vice-President for Campus Life.
