English poet, playwright, and lampoonist.
Humbert Wolfe was an Italian-born English poet.
Humbert Wolfe was a gifted and energetic poet and civil servant. Born in Milan as Umberto Wolff, he became a British citizen when his father moved the family to England. Educated at Oxford, he had a long career in the Civil Service, first with the Board of Trade and then the Ministry of Labour, serving with distinction and attaining posts of increasing responsibility. He was also a skilled poet and influential essayist, publishing numerous books and countless articles, as well as translations of important works. He was a popular writer, perhaps best known for his satirical works, but fell out of favor due to changing literary tastes after World War II.
