Biographical History

Rosalie Gascoigne, born in New Zealand was a sculptor and painter, who represented Australia at the Venice Biennale in 1982. In 1974, her first solo exhibition was held at the Macquarie Galleries in Canberra. Her work has been acquired by all major public art institutions in Australia, and she died in Canberra in 1999.

Sculptor. Rosalie Gascoigne began sculpting using scrap iron and wooden boxes whilst raising her children at Mt Stromlo, where her husband Ben Gascoigne worked as an astronomer. Gascoigne's first serious exhibition was at Ann Lewis' Gallery A in Paddington, New South Wales, in 1974. Four years later she had become a major figure in the Australian art world, with a survey at the National Gallery of Victoria. She showed at the Venice Biennale in 1982, the first Australian female artist to do so. In 1994 she became a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia for service to the arts. Gascoigne died in Canberra in 1999.
