Biographical History

Gunner Hugh Smyth Hawes no. 38149, E Sub Section, (Gun-layer), 108 Howitzer Battery, 8th Field Artillery Brigade, 3rd Division A.I.F., enlisted 23 April 1917 and was repatriated to Australia 25 march 1919. He witnessed the crash that killed the Red Baron in France. Hawes and serveral other men from the 108th Howitzer Battery were amongst the first to get to the plane and find out the identity of the pilot. Hugh Hawes died in 1977.
