Biographical History
Isaac C. Elston, also known as "Major," was a store-keeper in Crawfordsville, Ind. in the 1820s. He became wealthy by land speculation, banking, and investment in railroads. He founded Elston National Bank of Crawfordsville, laid out a portion of the New Albany and Salem Railroad, and owned much of the land on which Lafayette, Ind. now stands. He had nine children. A daughter, Joanna, married Henry S. Lane, later governor of Indiana. Another daughter, Susan, married Lew Wallace. His son, Isaac Compton Elston, Jr. (also known as "Colonel") took over the bank after his father's death. Elston Jr.'s son, Isaac Compton Elston III (also known as "Lieutenant") followed in the tradition. The family home still stands in Crawfordsville.
