Biographical History

In 1914, University of Minnesota president Dr. George E. Vincent approached Drs. William and Charles Mayo to form a partnership that would combine the educational offerings of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota with the Graduate School at the University of Minnesota. In 1915, the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research was established and endowed to support general medical and surgical education and research. In 1964, the name of the Foundation was changed to the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, University of Minnesota. In 1983, the University and the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine severed ties, with the endowed funds being split between the two organizations. The University used part of the funds to establish and endow the Mayo Chair in Public Health.
