Biographical History
The Kodály Center of America was founded by Denise Bacon in April 1977 as a continuation of the Kodály Musical Training Institute, founded in 1969. The goals of both institutions were nearly identical: to play an important role in the development of the Kodály Concept in the U.S., to produce high-quality teachers in academic and summer programs, and develop leaders to carry the Kodály Method into the future.
Though founded and initially operated with limited resources, the KCA produced an intensive academic year program, a highly-regarded summer program associated with Southeastern Massachusetts University, and affiliations for masters degrees with four, separate universities. It also developed an association with the Boston Public Schools to conduct research and produce choral octavos and video tapes. In 1993, due to space limitations and competition from other Kodály institutions, the KMTI chose to merge with Capital University in Columbus, Ohio while the KCA transferred its certification program and student records there, but remained as a resource center.
