Biographical History
In June, 1937, an Industrial Hygiene Unit was established by the State Board of Health (WIHV85-A531), operated with funds allocated by the Federal Government under the Social Security Act. By 1940 the unit had been renamed the Industrial Hygiene Division. In 1959 the division was renamed the Division of Occupational Health (WIHV91-A689). In the Wisconsin State Archives' database, this heading is used for all appropriate entries, 1937-1959.
The Industrial Hygiene Division provided engineering, medical, and nursing consultation to industries and local health departments in attempting to control or eliminate health hazards in industrial and manufacturing plants. The division also promoted the establishment of plant medical and nursing programs.
