Biographical History

Plant physiologist, weed control expert. Arthur L. Bakke received his B.S. degree in 1909 and his M.S. in 1911. In 1917 he received a Ph. D. from the University of Chicago. As a plant physiologist and instructor, Bakke spent two years (1909-1910) at Elgin Academy (Illinois). From there he went to Iowa State University as an instructor and became full professor in 1925. He spent the remainder of his career at Iowa State. Bakke devoted his professional energies to weed control. He made significant contributions to weed control in Iowa with his studies in root reserves in perennial weeds, notably European bindweed and leafy surge, and his early work with sodium chlorate and atlacide. Bakke was active in the development of the American Society of Plant Physiologists and the the North Central Weed Conference.
