Alpheus Baker was born in 1825 in Abbeville, S.C., and became a teacher. In 1848 he settled in Glenville (Ala.) and began studying law, was admitted to the bar in 1849, and practiced in Eufaula (Ala.).
He served in the Confederate Army as the Captain of the "Eufaula Rifles" in the 1st Alabama. He then was elected Colonel of the 54th Alabama Infantry Regiment which contained Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama troops. The regiment participated in the siege of New Madrid (Mo.), the troops were later captured, and then exchanged.
Baker fought at Fort Pemberton and Baker's Creek, and was then promoted to brigadier-general. He was wounded at Ezra Church and in late 1865 the regiment fought in the Carolinas.
After the war Baker returned to Eufaula, and then to Louisville (Ky.) where he died in 1891. He was married twice; first to Louise Garvin, and then Pheribee M. Ricks.
